Determine which question the report will answer
"We want a measurement report" is a good start; but it does not define the scope. Do you want approval of the first sample, control of certain critical features throughout the party, or record of results to accompany the shipment? If the goal is specified, the appropriate control plan can be drawn up.
The report should have trackable part code, revision, relevant production party, and ID of the checked part. Feature numbers must match technical drawing; nominal value, tolerance, measurement result, and evaluation must be displayed in a comprehensible manner.
Not every feature is measured with the same device
Size, geometric relationship, surface roughness and hardness are different control needs. CMM is useful in evaluating some geometric properties; however, it is not assumed that each feature will be controlled by a single device. It is important to establish access and references, especially in the interior areas.
The resolution and measurement accuracy of the device are not the same, and conditions such as temperature can affect evaluation. Temperature and measurement writing, explains this distinction with a simple example.
Write the scope of 100% control
The measurement of an agreed characteristic in all parts does not mean that all the properties of the part are checked. Make it clear how often the properties are measured. If sampling is requested, the method and terms of acceptance must also be determined.
Share the customer format and document scope if the first part inspection or FAI is requested. A general first sample measurement report is not automatically identical to the FAI file prepared according to a specific standard.
Distinguish an inspection report from a material certificate
Dimensional results do not confirm the chemical composition of the material; nor does the material certificate indicate the measurements of the finished part. The two documents may be requested together, but their purpose is different. Discuss the relationship between the document and the production party from the beginning.
